The New Mexico Goatheads have added another young piece to their inaugural blue line, signing 20-year-old Swedish defenseman Edvin Nilsson to an ECHL contract for the 2026-27 season.
Nilsson heads to New Mexico following a career-best season in the BCHL, where he recorded 43 points (7 goals, 36 assists) in 54 games between the Vernon Vipers and Chilliwack Chiefs.
“Edvin is a smart, mobile defenseman who moves the puck well and plays with poise,” said Head Coach Zack Stortini. “He has strong instincts, competes hard and makes good decisions under pressure. He brings a steady presence to our blue line, and we’re excited to have him here in New Mexico.”
Nilsson began last season with Vernon, serving as an alternate captain while recording 22 points (3 goals, 19 assists) in 34 games. He later joined Chilliwack and elevated his offensive production, posting 21 points (4 goals, 17 assists) in just 20 regular-season games. He added four points (1 goal, 3 assists) in 12 playoff games with the Chiefs.
The 5-foot-11, 190-pound defenseman finished his two seasons in the BCHL with 61 points (10 goals, 51 assists) across 97 regular-season games. He also appeared in six games with the Green Bay Gamblers of the USHL during the 2024-25 season.
A native of Tranås, Sweden, Nilsson developed in the HV71 system before making the move to North America. He also gained professional experience in Sweden with HC Dalen and has represented his home country internationally at the junior level.
Nilsson brings another puck-moving presence to the Goatheads' inaugural blue line as New Mexico continues building toward its first season.
The Goatheads open the 2026-27 regular season on Friday, Oct. 16, against the Idaho Steelheads at the Rio Rancho Events Center.
