Daschke Named First Captain in Goatheads History

The New Mexico Goatheads have named defenseman Derek Daschke the first captain in franchise history, with defenseman Trevor Zins and forward Jake Chiasson serving as alternate captains for the team's inaugural 2026-27 season.

Daschke, who will wear the "C" on his No. 5 jersey, brings extensive leadership experience to New Mexico. He previously served as captain of the Chicago Steel (USHL) during the 2017-18 season and Miami University (Ohio) during the 2021-22 season.

The defenseman also brings an impressive professional résumé, earning All-ECHL First Team honors in 2024-25 after recording 56 points (17G, 39A) in 65 games with the Utah Grizzlies. Daschke has also spent time at the AHL level with the Abbotsford Canucks.

Zins, who will wear an "A" on his No. 2 jersey, appeared in 65 ECHL games last season with Idaho, Greensboro and Indy, recording 17 points (2G, 15A). He also contributed three assists in five playoff appearances.

Chiasson, who will wear the other "A" on his No. 19 jersey, brings experience at both the AHL and ECHL levels. Originally selected by the Edmonton Oilers in the fourth round of the 2021 NHL Entry Draft, Chiasson has appeared in 40 career AHL games and 102 ECHL contests.

The three players will lead the Goatheads into their first game in franchise history this Friday, Oct. 16, against the Idaho Steelheads at the Rio Rancho Events Center.
