More Than 16,000 Fans Welcome Professional Hockey Back to New Mexico During Historic Opening Weekend

After 17 years without professional hockey, New Mexico made one thing clear this weekend: the wait was worth it.

More than 16,000 fans packed the Rio Rancho Events Center across three games from October 16–18, as the New Mexico Goatheads officially began their inaugural ECHL season with a historic Opening Weekend presented by Del Norte Credit Union.

From a sold-out Opening Night on Friday to an electric Saturday night and a Sunday afternoon finale, the weekend was about far more than the action on the ice. It marked the return of a sport that had been absent from New Mexico since 2009, and the beginning of a new chapter for hockey fans across the state.

A Sold-Out Welcome to New Mexico

The anticipation that had been building for more than a year finally became reality Friday evening, when the Goatheads took the ice for the first time in franchise history against the Idaho Steelheads.

A sold-out crowd welcomed the team with a sea of illuminated foam sticks, filling the arena with noise and color as players were introduced and the first puck drop approached.

For the fans who had waited nearly two decades to see professional hockey return, the moment represented something much bigger than the start of a new season.

The night also featured a milestone in franchise history, as Cameron Buhl scored the first goal in New Mexico Goatheads history during the third period of the inaugural game.

Saturday Night Delivers an Unforgettable Moment

The excitement carried into Saturday, as another energetic crowd filled the Rio Rancho Events Center for the second game of Opening Weekend.

Trailing Idaho late in regulation, the Goatheads mounted a third-period comeback before Lynden Breen scored with just one second remaining to force overtime.

The last-second goal sent the arena into a frenzy, providing one of the weekend's defining moments and an early glimpse of the kind of atmosphere Goatheads fans can create.

Although Idaho ultimately prevailed in overtime, New Mexico's resilience and the crowd's response made for a memorable second night in franchise history.

A Weekend Built Around the Fans

Sunday afternoon brought the inaugural weekend to a close, with 4,147 fans returning for the third game in as many days.

Fans received commemorative team posters and had the opportunity to meet Goatheads players during a postgame autograph session, providing another chance for the community to connect with its new team.

On the ice, Buhl and Breen each found the back of the net for the second time during Opening Weekend, while Francesco Arcuri contributed two assists in Sunday's contest.

Across all three games, fans showed up in Goatheads jerseys, filled the stands with the team's colors and brought energy throughout the weekend, creating an atmosphere that extended well beyond the final scores.

For a franchise playing its first three games, the response from New Mexico was unmistakable.

Just the Beginning

Opening Weekend represented the culmination of months of preparation, from the announcement of the franchise and the unveiling of its identity to the construction of the team's inaugural roster and the preparations necessary to bring professional hockey back to the state.

While the Goatheads continue to build chemistry and find their footing in their first ECHL season, the weekend offered an encouraging look at the support surrounding the franchise.

With 33 home games still to come, the Goatheads will have plenty of opportunities to build on the foundation established during Opening Weekend, both on the ice and in the stands.

The first three games may be over, but for professional hockey in New Mexico, this is only the beginning.

The Goatheads return to the Rio Rancho Events Center on Friday, October 30, and Saturday, October 31, for a two-game series against the Rapid City Rush. Both games begin at 7:00 PM MT, with tickets starting at just $15.
