GOATHEADS SHIFT FOCUS TO TAHOE AHEAD OF FIRST ROAD TRIP

Practice Report presented by New Mexico Orthopaedic

RIO RANCHO, N.M. – The New Mexico Goatheads returned to the ice this week at the McDermott Athletic Center as the team prepares for its first road trip of the 2026-27 ECHL season against the Tahoe Knight Monsters.

Following a competitive three-game opening series against the Idaho Steelheads, the Goatheads have turned their attention toward building on the positives from Opening Weekend while continuing to fine-tune their game on both sides of the puck.

Head Coach Zack Stortini and his staff have emphasized the importance of puck management, defensive-zone structure, and creating more sustained offensive pressure. With the season still in its early stages, establishing consistency and developing chemistry throughout the lineup remain priorities.

A key focus heading into the weekend is improving execution in transition, particularly through cleaner defensive-zone exits and quicker movement through the neutral zone. Winning battles along the boards, establishing a strong forecheck, and getting pucks deep will also be important as the Goatheads look to spend more time in the offensive zone.

On the offensive side, New Mexico will look to generate additional scoring opportunities by getting more pucks to the net, creating traffic in front of opposing goaltenders, and capitalizing on second-chance opportunities. Special teams continue to be another area of emphasis, with both the power play and penalty kill looking to establish consistency as the season progresses.

The upcoming road trip will provide another early test for the Goatheads as they continue to develop their identity. Playing away from the Rio Rancho Events Center will put an added emphasis on disciplined hockey, strong starts, and maintaining momentum throughout all three periods.

With their first weekend of ECHL action behind them, the Goatheads will look to translate this week's work on the practice ice into a complete 60-minute effort against Tahoe.
